Feminist UX Design: Safety in Cities and Inclusivity in E-Commerce<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Margarita Osipova and her co-presenter Urszula Kulon from the Bauhaus University Weimar demonstrated how UX design can make digital and urban spaces safer and more inclusive for women. Their feminist approach, which emphasizes pluralism and participation, illustrated how design can specifically improve quality of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Inclusivity in Fashion E-Commerce<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n In the first part of her presentation, Urszula analyzed women\u2019s experiences on fashion e-commerce websites. Studies have shown that unsuccessful online purchases often have a negative impact on self-image. In response, a prototype website was developed that incorporates features such as avatars based on users\u2019 own measurements, more realistic models in various poses, and more precise size information. In addition, the website takes into account different body types, skin tones, and age groups to appeal to a broader range of users. These measures not only improve the user experience but also help minimize returns and their environmental impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The second part of the presentation explored how UX design can better protect women in urban spaces. Studies show that technologies often only intervene once danger has already occurred\u2014an approach that Margarita criticized as inadequate. Instead, preventive solutions should be developed to minimize risks early on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Research conducted in Berlin, Cairo, and Melbourne highlighted specific challenges: ranging from harassment on public transportation to gaps in legal protections. Margarita emphasized that solutions such as smart urban planning or preventive safety measures must be complemented by a feminist co-design approach. Only through the active involvement of those affected can urban spaces be created that promote both safety and inclusivity. A truly \u201esmart\u201c city does not begin with reactive measures, but with preventive, people-centered design that prioritizes safety from the very beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The presentation made it clear that UX design plays a key role in creating more inclusive and safer spaces by taking human perspectives and needs into account. Margarita emphasized that the key to a better world lies in active listening\u2014and in design that responds to the real diversity of people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In his presentation, Holm H\u00e4nsel, a UX designer at Jambit, demonstrated how Generative UI (GenUI) enables personalized user experiences through AI. Instead of standardized interfaces, GenUI allows for dynamic adjustments based on user behavior and individual data. Holm presented examples such as accessible designs for people with dyslexia that use high-contrast interfaces and reduced text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This approach offers clear advantages: Products tailored precisely to users' needs increase user satisfaction and loyalty, while automated processes remain efficient and scalable. Designers play a strategic role by defining the rules for the AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In his presentation, Ravi Kanth Kosuru of Fraunhofer IAO demonstrated how neurophysiologically based interfaces have the potential to create innovative technologies that promote greater inclusion. These systems are designed to take into account the diversity of human abilities and enable barrier-free interactions in both personal and professional settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ravi discussed the evolution of human-technology interaction and noted that the focus is increasingly shifting toward automated and cognitive technologies. One example of these advancements is the context-sensitive communication system KONTAKT. Using eye tracking and sensors that analyze the conversational environment, it enables people with disabilities to type text more quickly and communicate more effectively. Context-sensitive word suggestions and optimized user interfaces simplify interaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In closing, Ravi emphasized that an inclusive future requires overcoming barriers to interaction and developing technologies that can adapt flexibly. Human diversity should be seen not as an obstacle, but as an opportunity for innovative technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The second part of our conference recap highlights just how diverse and forward-thinking the presentations at WUD 2024 were. From UX writing standards to AI-powered interfaces to feminist and neurophysiological approaches\u2014every session highlighted how UX design can promote inclusion, precision, and context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Practical applications such as accessible interfaces in healthcare, adaptive workplaces, and safer smart cities offer promising prospects.
