Today, we’re shining the spotlight on three remarkable women: Katherine Johnson, Radia Perlman, and Barbara Liskov.
First up is Katherine Johnson, whose precise mathematical calculations at NASA were essential to the space missions of the 1960s. The Apollo 11 moon landing would have been virtually unthinkable without their contributions. The film *Hidden Figures* brought their story to a wider audience—and today she stands as a symbol of how important it is to break down barriers in science and technology.
From space exploration, we move on to network architecture: Radia Perlman With the development of the Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), she laid one of the foundations of modern communication technologies. Her innovations make networks efficient and stable—an achievement without which the Internet as we know it today might not exist in its current form. Despite her pivotal role, her name is rarely known outside the IT community.
Another figure who is often overlooked is Barbara Liskov, whose groundbreaking ideas have had a profound impact on software development. Her „Liskov Substitution Principle“ set a standard in object-oriented programming that continues to shape the field to this day. As only the second woman to receive the Turing Award, she inspired generations of developers—yet outside the IT world, her name remains unknown to many.
What these three women have in common is not only their extraordinary expertise, but also the fact that their achievements have often gone unrecognized.
