„Designing for a Better World“—under this motto, our top-tier speakers at the eighth WUD Leipzig demonstrated how technology and design can positively shape the future. While our news article focused on the event and its highlights, in this in-depth review we take a closer look at the presentations and workshops. Unconventional perspectives from UX practice ran throughout the entire day and offered new approaches to sustainable solutions. The ever-present topic of artificial intelligence was also a key focus and was examined from various angles.
Keynote: All Creatives Are Dying Out—GenAI Is Taking Over
In his keynote address, Richard Bretschneider demonstrated how artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming creative processes and what impact this has on professions in the music industry. His starting point was the observation that art is not rooted in tools or technologies, but in the individual worldviews of the people who produce art. But what happens when AI takes on an ever-greater role?

Through an experiment, Richard demonstrated just how quickly AI can now handle creative tasks. Using ChatGPT and AI-powered music tools, he generated a fully produced song in just 90 seconds. Although he was impressed by the results, he posed the critical question: If the creative process—the very essence of art—is replaced by AI, is there still room for individuality?
However, rather than predicting the demise of creativity and art, Richard demonstrated how AI can solve certain problems in the music industry: for example, by cloning voices to simulate choirs, using intuitive hand gestures to control complex synthesizers, or an enhanced guitar that produces drum sounds. His conclusion: AI is not a substitute for creativity, but a tool. It is up to users to consciously decide how they use technology—as a support or as a substitute.
AI as a Partner in the Design and Development Process
In their presentation titled „Replace Me If You Can,“ Danny Hucke and Tina Marschner of IT Sonix explained how AI tools can support the design and development process. They asked: Can AI complement or even replace human expertise to develop functional prototypes more quickly?
In an experiment, they developed a mood-tracking journal—a minimalist tool with design and backend components. Using specialized tools such as Locofy, Gemini, and GitHub Copilot Workspace, they created an end-to-end product. These tools enabled rapid prototyping and creative approaches, but required constant monitoring and clear direction.

The key takeaway: AI tools boost productivity and open up new possibilities, but they are not „one-click solutions.“ Each tool has specific requirements that make human expertise indispensable.
Building on their presentation, the two also led an interactive workshop that focused on the tools Locofy and Lovable. Participants worked in pairs on tasks such as dashboards and contact forms and learned how to achieve more precise results through targeted and iterative prompts. The discussion highlighted potential applications such as rapid prototyping and user flow testing, but also pointed out limitations such as inefficient code. The workshop underscored the high potential of AI-supported prototyping, while emphasizing the need for a clear methodological approach to efficiently integrate the results into development processes.
From Chatbots to Friends: Design Principles for Conversational AI
In his presentation „From Chatbots to Friends: Design Principles for Conversational AI,“ Dominique Winter of Produktwerker demonstrated how conversational AI systems can become emotional and responsible companions through thoughtful relationship design. As in traditional UX design, the user experience is at the center of this approach. However, according to Dominique, it’s not just about creating a good experience, but above all about ensuring that it leaves a positive impression. After all, memorable experiences lead users to value products over the long term and use them again and again.
Particularly interesting was the idea that humans and AI „educate“ each other. Conversational AIs learn through feedback and interactions, and clear values and principles must be in place to prevent undesirable developments. At the same time, the AI’s „personality“ influences user behavior.

Dominique emphasized the responsibility to design systems in a way that promotes respect, empathy, and fairness. He concluded, in essence, by noting that we shape the world of tomorrow not only through ourselves, but also through our products and the principles they represent.
Human Factors as the Key to Fair and Safe Transportation Systems
Oliver Singler, a research associate at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, emphasized the central importance of human factors in designing safe and equitable transportation systems. This discipline examines the interaction between people and technology in order to design systems that are user-friendly, safe, and efficient. This is particularly relevant in transportation, as over 80% of accidents are attributable to human error. Despite technical innovations such as emergency braking assistants, the accident rate remains stagnant—a sign that technical solutions alone are not enough.
Oliver emphasized the need to develop systems that promote intuitive behavior and reduce cognitive load. To this end, the research combines objective methods—such as psychophysiological measurements of stress responses (e.g., pupil size or heart rate) and behavioral analyses (e.g., braking and steering maneuvers)—with subjective assessments, such as those obtained through questionnaires.

As a specific example of application, he cited the development of maps for autonomous vehicles that protect vulnerable road users, as well as eye-tracking analyses to predict the movements of cyclists.
In closing, Oliver emphasized that human factors are of great importance in all disciplines. Taking human needs into account is crucial for creating safe and sustainable systems in nearly all fields—from medicine to software development. He called for these principles to be integrated more fully in order to address future challenges through a holistic, human-centered approach.
Outlook
In summary, World Usability Day 2024 in Leipzig impressively demonstrated just how diverse and far-reaching current developments in UX design are. From the role of artificial intelligence as a creative partner to the design of conversational AIs and the central importance of human factors in transportation systems—all presentations emphasized that people must always be at the center. It became clear that technology should not be viewed as a replacement, but rather as a tool to enhance human capabilities and create sustainable, safe solutions.
A common thread ran through the presentations: the responsibility we bear as designers and developers to create products and systems that are not only functional but also ethical and inclusive. The emphasis was on making conscious decisions about how we use technology and which principles we incorporate into our work.
