The International Repair Day is an annual reminder of the importance of repairs in promoting sustainability and responsible use of resources. This awareness is deeply embedded at IT Sonix: we not only use green electricity and sustainable marketing materials, but also prioritise the responsible use and reuse of hardware and office furniture.

Efficient Use and Reuse of Hardware

Our hardware is an essential part of daily work. It is therefore crucial to maximise its lifespan through proper use and repairs. We strive to use our hardware for as long as possible. If a laptop no longer meets the demands of complex tasks, it is reassigned to other departments or teams that require less processing power. This way, we optimise the lifespan of our devices and avoid unnecessary electronic waste. For instance, some of our teams continue to use older laptops as control units or for monitoring systems. As a result, functional devices remain in use, taking on specialised tasks that do not require new hardware. When devices are no longer needed internally, we refurbish them – meaning they are digitally wiped and, if necessary, repaired – and donate them to organisations. To further enhance our processes for reuse and recycling of electronics, we plan to collaborate with companies such as handysfuerdieumwelt.de and green2b.de in the future.

Office Furniture – Repair and Sustainable Redesign

Sustainability is also a key focus when it comes to our office equipment. As part of implementing a unified workspace concept, we upgraded our workstations with height-adjustable desks to promote the health of our employees. Table tops that did not fit the new concept were gifted to our employees or donated via eBay Classifieds. The remaining table tops were mounted onto the height-adjustable frames. We also focus on repairs when it comes to office chairs. Chairs with stained upholstery or loose armrests are cleaned or repaired rather than simply replaced. Furniture that is no longer needed in the office is either gifted to employees or offered at a small cost price.

Our Contribution to Sustainability

The International Repair Day is an excellent opportunity to highlight the value of repairs and reuse. At IT Sonix, we actively pursue these strategies to reduce waste and use our resources more efficiently. Our commitment to extend the lifespan of hardware and repair furniture instead of replacing it contributes to a more sustainable way of working.
