Our Work
As part of this completed project, we developed a custom billing engine for SENEC, a leading provider of energy storage solutions. The middleware digitizes and automates highly complex billing processes—from the preliminary calculation of individual energy contracts to the integration with Powercloud and automated invoice printing. Over the course of the project, the solution was expanded to include integration with EnBW’s in-house billing system as well as the ongoing implementation of regulatory requirements specific to the energy industry.

Since 2009, the SENEC GmbH in Leipzig intelligent Energy Storage Systems and Storage-Based Energy Solutions. With more than 75,000 systems sold and a network of over 1,100 specialist partners, SENEC is one of Europe’s leading providers of innovative energy and storage solutions for single-family homes. Its product portfolio includes energy storage systems, solar modules, a virtual electricity account, and electric vehicle charging stations. Since 2018, SENEC has been a wholly owned subsidiary of EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG and employs over 450 people at locations in Germany, Italy, and Australia.

Project Success Story
A custom billing engine that fully automates invoicing for highly specialized energy contracts, from the middleware through Powercloud to the final PDF invoice, in production since 2020.
Key Areas of Cooperation
The goal of the collaboration was to enable an energy service provider with highly specialized contract structures to bill its customers automatically, accurately, and in compliance with the law—without having to modify existing contract structures. At the same time, the solution was designed to scale with increasing demands: new product generations, regulatory changes, and additional billing systems had to be flexibly integrable.
Implementation
- Integration with Powercloud as a central database — deliberately without its own data storage, to ensure data consistency and traceability
- Integration of EnBW's proprietary billing system as an intermediary in the billing process
- Development of a JavaScript-based Print Engine for Automated PDF Generation and Submission
- Implementation of Legal Requirements (Electricity Price Cap, Section 14a of the Energy Industry Act (EnWG)) shortly after it takes effect
- Development of Semi-Automated Processes for any remaining special cases, as well as a cancellation tool.

Billing Engine Features
Results of the Collaboration
SENEC can process the majority of its customer invoices automatically, accurately, and with virtually no manual post-processing. The billing engine handles all common contract and billing scenarios—including special cases, sub-contracts, and special legal provisions. What previously required time-consuming Excel mail merge processes is now fully automated: from preliminary calculations through transfer to Powercloud and the EnBW system all the way to the final invoice PDF.
