Our Work

Managing, monitoring, and intelligently controlling thousands of energy storage systems simultaneously in real time—that is the challenge we solved together with SENEC. Based on MQTT and Apache Kafka, we developed a scalable IoT platform that processes approximately 5 million messages per minute. Building on this, we developed an electricity price optimization system that automatically analyzes daily EPEX spot prices and intelligently controls the charging process for the storage units. This results in measurable financial benefits for the end customer.

The goal was to reliably manage thousands of energy storage systems in the field in real time—with the ability to remotely diagnose, update, and automatically integrate devices. In addition, the end customer was to receive tangible financial benefits through smart charging control that automatically adjusts to daily electricity prices.

Results of the Collaboration

Today, SENEC has a highly available IoT platform that reliably manages several thousand storage units in real time—with remote firmware updates, real-time diagnostics, and automatic onboarding via a web app. Partner specialists can be supported entirely remotely, without the need for on-site visits. Electricity price optimization adds a concrete value-added feature to the platform: The storage system automatically charges when electricity is cheap, thereby reducing grid consumption during peak-price periods.

At the heart of the platform is an event-driven architecture based on MQTT and Apache Kafka—deliberately chosen over traditional REST polling, which reaches its limits when thousands of devices are communicating simultaneously. Targeted performance optimizations through bulk processing significantly increased throughput without requiring fundamental changes to the architecture. The electricity price optimization feature evaluates current EPEX spot prices daily via a CronJob and automatically controls the charging process without manual intervention.
